How to Gain Clarity in Your Goals

How many times have you caught yourself saying, “If I would just do (xyz), then I’d finally achieve (abc)!” But yet, it’s been so long and you still haven’t achieved whatever ABC is.

Fear not— you are not alone.

Many people find themselves in this kind of slump, so today we’re going to talk about 3 ways that you can help pull yourself out of it, and gain some clarity about your goals.

First, is your goal crystal clear?

The first question to ask yourself is have you set clear and defined expectations when it comes to your goal?

“I want to lose weight” or “I want to get stronger” are pretty superficial, and nondescript goals. They don’t have much substance to them because it doesn’t say exactly what you want to do, or how you’re going to do it. Instead, look at your goal and see how you can more clearly define it. Not only by which what you will do, but add a timeline in there too to make it even more measurable.

“I want to lose 5lbs by the end of December by cutting alcohol out of my diet,” is a specific and clear goal.

I want to make it to 6am class 3 days a week in the first quarter of 2023 by going to bed by 10pm each night is another great specific and actionable goal.

Second, does your goal have expectations surrounding it?

The next thing to look objectively at your goal with, are lenses that have clear expectations. If you say you’re going to eliminate junk food completely out of your diet, is this realistic for where you currently are? If you say you’re going to stop drinking all together, are you realistically set up to say no to alcohol in high peer pressure situations? Have you worked on and built up the supporting habits you often need when it comes to total restriction? Could you still make great progress with defining those expectations a little more realistically?

Instead, try something like: I will only allow myself to consume 2 drinks each week through the end of December. And be clear with yourself on that expectation: How will you use it? Does this mean you have a freebie weekend? Or do you go into it with the mindset that you won’t drink, but in the event a social peer pressure situation pops up and you can’t handle it, you allow yourself that flexibility? How clearly can you define the supporting elements to your goal?

Third, does this goal align with what you truly want?

Sometimes we get ideas from other people and what they’re doing, and we think this is something we should be doing too. I know I’ve done this in the past, so I’m sure you have too. Your friend goes on a diet, and automatically it’s in your head too, so you start some crazy restrictive fad diet too, only to fail shortly after. Your mindset needs to be right and needs to be supportive of whatever it is you’re about to embark on. If you’re trying to fit a square peg in a round hole, let’s reevaluate the plan. Maybe you need to go a different direction, or maybe you need a different support system in order to make it happen. Maybe it’s not even this particular goal but another one, and you just objectively can’t see that in this moment.

Clarity is everything.

Oftentimes, I find that we as humans can get misguided by our own temptations. We think we want something, so we impulsively act right away on what short thought-out plan we put behind it.

Having a Coach to help you through these moments is incredibly valuable, and that’s exactly what our Coaches at Fit2Live will do.
