From Katie:

“For many years, I didn’t see myself as an athlete. The reason I became a swimmer in the first place was to make friends when I was the new kid in school. Joining a CrossFit gym was also never part of my plan, but when my other gym was closed during the pandemic, I decided to give “this place up the road” – Fit2Live – a try because they were offering parking lot workouts. I was terrified, but folks at this gym welcomed me and believed in me.

It turns out that group fitness is 100% my thing, whether it’s crushing it with the 6am crew or swimming laps with my Masters group (fun fact: in swimming, “Masters” simply means 18 and older). I do so much better when I work out with other people, especially people I know and who know me. What works so well for me is the accountability and encouragement, which often means that when I want to quit, I see my friends push through and that helps me find a little more endurance and courage.

I don’t like to work out by myself, and I usually don’t. It is also hard for me to build and sustain other habits – such as nutrition, sleep, and mobility – without the presence of my support systems. In my professional life, I meet weekly with my teaching partners and monthly with my research group, and this pushes me to improve my practice steadily and consistently. Several years ago, I had a significant weight loss by joining an accountability-based nationwide program. While I found the meetings somewhat cheesy, they really worked for me – – particularly seeing the example of “lifetime” and other long-term members who had made their habits stick.

When EJ and Ryan approached me about becoming a nutrition coach, I wasn’t sure, and I took several months to think about it. They pointed out that much of the work I already do is similar to nutrition and wellness coaching, and that the essential information was something I could learn. One of my personal core values is growth, so taking new paths is something that I fully embrace. While I definitely didn’t expect this door to open for me, I can see how the pieces have been falling into place for many years.

My previous experience with weight loss and nutrition education helped me begin to reorient my mindset around food. The biggest takeaway from that time in my life was to trust vegetables to fill me up. When I participated in a Fit2Live nutrition challenge for the first time, I told EJ that I didn’t know why I was always so hungry at school. I chose to work on the habit of incorporating protein with every meal and snack, and I’m proud that I’ve kept up that habit (mostly!) since 2022. During my second nutrition challenge, I chose to focus on getting at least 7 hours of sleep each night; before this, I was often getting less than 6. This last habit is still kind of unwieldy for me, and I continue to work on it. Every now and then, a friend from church asks me how my sleep hygiene is going! And most people in my life know that I try to maintain a consistent early bedtime.

For most of my life, I thought I was an introvert. Yes, really! It turns out that I’m not, and that I am healthier, happier, stronger, and fitter when I have buddies to join me in these key areas of my life.

I am a real-life example of how a holistic and habit-based approach changes a person’s life over the long term. I am excited to be part of your support system as your Nutrition and Wellness Coach!”
