Sammy and Steven Hurbis- Members of the Month for July 2024!

July 2024

This month’s spotlight is on the hard working and always fun to be around power couple Sammy and Steven Hurbis.

Steven got his start at Fit2Live in August of 2022 and Sammy got her start in March of 2023 after having their first child.

Steven and Sammy both went all in at Fit2Live with our foundations program and nutrition and wellness coaching, knowing that they needed to lay a solid foundation of healthy habits upon adding a child to their lives.

In the last 2 years they have both accomplished some amazing things with their healthy lifestyle habits, body composition, and performance inside and outside of the gym, all while working full time jobs and raising an awesome son.

There is NEVER a dull moment when Steven is in class, always bringing the life to the Fit2Live party while still working hard.

Sammy is quite the determined, focused and very hard working member as well, often offering up support and camaraderie to those who need it most.

These awesome parents consistently prioritize their health and fitness with classes at Fit2Live.

Steven is a proud member of our 250 class club and Sammy is solidly in the 100 class club.

They even knocked out their first Fall Brawl competition together in October of 2023!

We are lucky to have this awesome couple kicking butt at Fit2Live.

For these reasons and many more, Sammy and Steven have been chosen as our members of the month for July of 2024!

Tell us about yourselves, where you’re from, what you do for work, hobbies, what do you do outside of work and Fit2Live?

Sammy- I grew up and have lived in Saline most of my life. I was on the swim team at the University of Toledo where I studied Speech Language Pathology before getting my Masters at Wayne State University. Previously, I was an SLP at an elementary school but now I spend my days at home with my son catching bugs, playing in the water, and reading books.

Steven- I was born in Saline and have lived in Saline almost my entire life with the exception of during law school. I’m a “trial” lawyer for a large catastrophic injury law firm in Detroit. Outside of work and getting heckin’ fit, I love hanging poolside (possibly with a fun drink) with the family, badly playing golf, and running a dungeons and dragons’ group with my brother.

Tell us your love story but spare us some of the sappy details. How did you meet, first date, proposal details, etc.

We grew up on the same summer swim team and eventually started coaching together on that same team. We started dating shortly before Steven left for law school in Illinois despite Sammy saying “no” to being my girlfriend. That was the last time he asked. Our first date was laser tag and chicken fingers at Knights.

We dated long distance for 3 years before moving to Dearborn when Sammy started grad school and Steven started at his current firm. We got engaged in 2018 at Crystal Lake surrounded by family. We were one of the “lucky” few who had their wedding postponed by COVID before tying the knot on Captiva Island in December 2020.

When and why did you get started at Fit2Live?

Sammy- I got started at Fit2Live 5 weeks after having my son. I got started because Steven was having so much fun and I thought it would be a great way to continue my fitness journey.

Steven- Until Fit2Live, I had never seriously lifted weights in my life. To stay in shape, I would force myself to sign up for half-marathons and marathons, so I had to train. I worked with an online personal trainer to get trim for our wedding, but that lifestyle was just never sustainable for me. In the fall of 2022, I was not happy with my health or fitness. Sammy was 4/5 months pregnant, and I wanted to make a change to be as healthy as possible for our son. I was extremely nervous to try a CrossFit gym. Sammy actually found Fit2Live and encouraged me to reach out. After that first meeting with Ryan, I felt so at ease and have never looked back.

What do you love most about Fit2Live, what keeps you coming back consistently?

Sammy- I love being challenged each day at the gym and working hard with a community of people. But most importantly, I enjoy kicking Steven’s *ss and will continue going to the gym until I can’t.

Steven- No surprise here, the people and the community! There is simply no place I would rather be for an hour sweating my buns off. Shout out to my 9AM homies.

You’re pretty busy parents with full time jobs. This question is all about parenting.

How do you both prioritize and make time for your fitness at Fit2Live?

It sounds simple but it really is just a priority for both of us. We want to set a good example for our son, and we want to be able to live long and healthy lives with him. There are a lot of other things we could be spending our time doing but really nothing we would rather be doing. The gym gives us the strength to chase after our toddler, lug him and all of his toys around, and climb up and down the stairs over and over and over again. We want to always be able to do those things with him.

Give us your favorite parenting hack and one surprising thing you’ve learned from becoming a parent.

Always ALWAYS go outside. That’s our hack. One surprising thing is how much joy he has just being with us. You don’t always have to be doing special things or doing all these “cool” things, he really loves being around his people and just spending quality time.

Give us a fun, maybe unknown fact about yourselves.

Sammy- As a child, I would demolish the one pounder cheeseburger challenge at Cheeburger Cheeburger and also order onion rings and a milkshake.

Steven- I am a world class laser tag player, and yes actually world class.

Steven, describe Sammy in 1 sentence to someone who hasn’t met her. Sammy, describe Steven in 1 sentence to someone who has never met him.

Sammy- Steven is a hardworking family man with a contagious positive attitude that makes everyone around him smile.

Steven- Sammy is kind beyond description and truly cares about all those around her.

How are you two alike and how are you two not alike?

We think everyone might know the answer to this one. Steven is very extroverted, outgoing, and um loud. Sammy is more reserved, happier in a quiet space, and a much better listener. Despite those differences, our number 1 priority is our family and that has always been a huge part of our lives. We are also hyper competitive to a truly dangerous degree.

Give yourselves a power couple nickname. Now make a power couple workout with that name. What movements, repetitions, format, etc?

                    Opposites Attract:
                    1k bike
                    10 Heavy Deadlifts
                    1k run
                    10 Heavy Cleans
                    1k row
                    10 Heavy Thursters

Favorites! What is your favorite song, book, movie, tv show, quote?

                      Sammy:

Song- I Had Some Help (Post Malone ft. Morgan Wallen)

                      Book- The Overnight Guest

                      Movie- Any Harry Potter

                      TV Show- Game of Thrones

Quote- To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.

                      Steven:

Song- The Way I Love You (TSwift) or Sand In My Boots (Morgan Wallen)

Book- Lord of the Rings Return of the King or Oathbringer (Stormlight Archives)

                      Movie- Dodgeball (I’m a child)

                      TV Show- Friends

Quote- A good lawyer knows the law. A great lawyer knows the judge.

What is your biggest fitness accomplishment to-date and what fitness goal are you most pursuing/working towards currently?

Sammy- My biggest accomplishment to date is the training we do at the gym has set me up to train for anything. I feel fit enough that there isn’t something I could not decide to do. If I wanted to run a marathon, do a swim meet, or join a soccer team, I’m in shape enough to start any of those things. I’m currently working toward continuing my consistency.

Steven- This is a tough one. Honestly, I would say consistency is my biggest accomplishment to date. I usually manage to show up 4-5 times a week and I’m excited to be there. I should probably say double-unders or kipping pull ups but boy those aren’t my favorite. My goal for 2024 and beyond are those dang muscles ups.

THANKS FOR BEING AWESOME SAMMY AND STEVEN!

KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK AT FIT2LIVE!
